The City of Sherman Siren Test
The City of Sherman Siren test is coordinated by the City of Sherman Emergency Manager and Grayson County ARES. The organization that coordinates all the ARES, RACES, SKYWARN, and CoCoRaHS services in Grayson County is the Texoma Emergency Communication Organization or TECO. Information can be found here: http://www.tecoares.org/ There is also a calendar on that site which lists the Siren Test.
The Amateur Radio operators have been helping do this test every since I got my ticket in 2008 and I know they were helping for many years before that. I might be able to dig up when Amateur Radio became involved in this test but currently I do not know. I have been coordinating this test between the Amateur Radio operators and the City of Sherman since 2011.
The City of Sherman tests the outdoor warning sirens the first Wednesday of the month at 9:00 am weather permitting. The Siren Test net activates at 8:40 am from the Sherman EOC and the test usually take about 30 minutes to complete.
What the Amateur Radio operators are doing when they are assigned to a particular siren is to verify that the siren operates correctly. That means verifying that the siren actually sounds and rotates. The computers at the City EOC can determine that the siren is communicating but not if they are actually working correctly. This is where our Amateur Radio operators play an important role. Also for every siren that does not have an Amateur Radio operator assigned, the City usually sends out Fire assets to monitor those sirens so by having Amateur Radio operators assigned we can keep the City from deploying those assets but only if they are not on a call or they will leave if they receive a call.
Currently there are 19 Sirens in the City of Sherman and the City is planning on adding 3 more in the near future. 1 current siren and 1 future siren will be at a Fire Station so we usually do not monitor those.
You do not have to live in Sherman to participate in this test, any Amateur Radio operator can participate. So my list of Amateur Radio operators change every month but usually these participate off and on depending if they have time.
